Physics is the science of studying the basic movement of matter. It is a fundamental discipline in natural science, and the foundation of all disciplines of modern engineering and technology. It has integrated with many other disciplines, producing a number of interdisciplines and comprehensive disciplines which now become the research frontier in science and technology. Founded in 1954, the Department of Physics has cultivated a large number of talents for the country as well as physics teachers for universities and colleges and middle schools in Hubei province. This major is among the first batch to get approval of "brand major" in the universities of Hubei province. In 2008, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as the construction site of Characteristic Majors of higher education institutions. The major has one first-class key (nurture) discipline at provincial level in Physics. It offers master programs of first-class discipline in physics and master's degree program in Curriculum and Pedagogy (physics). It has a provincial demonstration center of experimental physics teaching, a national-level teaching team, a provincial-level excellent course, 2 provincial-level quality courses and 2 school-level excellent courses. The training program is along two directions: the direction of normal education and the direction of physics.
